Sports gear for schools could help reduce fighting among pupils, according to research commissioned by Sainsbury’s.

Some 37% of teachers asked said they believed sports equipment supplied through the retailer’s Active Kids promotion had helped put a stop to scraps in the playground. Sainsbury’s has donated 34m [pounds sterling] worth of sports equipment, kit and coaching to schools in the two years since the launch of the voucher-based scheme, which was named best consumer initiative in The Grocer Gold Awards 2006.

Sports shipments are currently making their way to 26,000 primary, secondary and special needs schools, as well as some nurseries. One teacher, Ian Webber, PE coordinator at Coppice Primary School in Sutton Coldfield, said: “We had a critically difficult Year 6. When we received the sports equipment from Sainsbury’s, children took up new games and made new friends

ChosenSecurity Joins Adobe Certified Document Services Program to Help Ensure Authenticity of PDF Documents

Market Wire, December, 2007

ChosenSecurity, Inc., a leading global provider
of On-Demand PKI (public key infrastructure) security services, today
announced a partnership with Adobe® Systems Incorporated. The partnership
has allowed ChosenSecurity to develop TC Business ID for Adobe, a new
product for verifying the authenticity and integrity of documents and forms
stored in the Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF). ChosenSecurity designed
TC Business ID for Adobe for organizations in document- and forms-intensive
industries such as financial services, insurance and government to help
them enjoy the benefits of working with digital, rather than paper-based
information, in a highly secure manner.

Many businesses prefer the efficiency and cost savings associated with
entirely digital workflows for processes such as handling insurance claims
and processing mortgage applications, but resort to paper to attempt to
verify that documents have not been altered. The ChosenSecurity TC Business
for Adobe solution allows authors of PDF documents and personalized PDF
forms to centrally sign them on a server using a hardware security module.
The recipients can then check the validity of the signature using the free
Adobe PDF Reader.

“With TC Business ID for Adobe, PDF documents can be digitally signed and
unambiguously linked to the author,” said Dr. Rolf Lindemann, director of
product management at ChosenSecurity

MY WEDDING DRESS

MY WEDDING DRESS

EDITED BY SUSAN WHELEHAN AND ANN LAUREL CARTER

Penguin Canada

REVIEW BY MARGUERITE ANDERSEN

I married three times. I had three wedding dresses-two of them were white, one I cannot even remember. I don’t know what happened to them. I was curious to know what other women had to say on the subject in these 26 “True-life Tales of Lace, Laughter, Tears and Tulle” announced by the subtitle of My Wedding Dress, an anthology edited by Susan Whelehan and Ann Laurel Carter. So I found myself spending a week reading about heterosexual and lesbian love, about weddings, children, bliss and non-bliss.

Let me say it right away: 20 of the tales have a happy or positive ending; six don’t. These figures do not quite fit divorce statistics. But, endorsed by June Callwood (married in a grey flannel suit) and by Heather Mallick (married in a purple suit), with a foreword by Stevie Cameron (married in cream-coloured silk and wedding photographer long island lace),and a contribution by Michele Landsberg (married in a short dress of green and pink silk), what could be wrong with My Wedding Dress?

In fact, nothing is wrong with it. Twenty-six talented, experienced or emerging writers of diverse backgrounds have contributed their stories, and were obviously pleased to have the opportunity to speak about their feelings concerning marriage

How is the economy affecting your firms? What changes are you implementing because of today’s slowing economy?

JOHNSON: Like probably every firm in town, we [Stoel Rives] are worried about the economy. Things have slowed down. Transactional work is very, very slow. I suspect for most everybody else, though, there are other areas of your firms that are fairly robust–litigation, labor employment, bankruptcy, restructuring. One thing we are doing criminal attorney grand rapids is deferring incoming associates until February 1 of next year. We are going to provide a stipend and help them get past the Bar, but we are postponing them from coming on. We are also shortening our summer court program to eight weeks, whereas historically it has been 10 to 12 weeks. We are going to be putting a freeze on the administrative salaries and we have a host of other things that are sort of contingency plans as we work our way through this difficult time and decide what we have to do to make sure that we remain strong, vibrant and a profitable law firm.

LORIMER: Like everyone else, the economy has affected us [Workman Nydegger]

Health

Black Enterprise, Dec, 2008 by Stacy Gilliam

WORD ON THE STREET IS THAT lousiville massage therapy DIET fads are a thing of the past, healthy foods are becoming even healthier, and your typical spa and spa treatments can no longer be categorized in the same way.

Health experts say you should look for an increased in genetically engineered foods such as fruits and vegetables that contain phytochemicals and antioxidants–supernutrients that fight disease. The next time you go to buy broccoli, you may see a stalk with added cancer-fighting antioxidants. “These foods will improve on what they already do to your body,” says Rovenia Brock, renowned nutritionist and author of Dr. Ro’s 10 Secrets to Livin’ Healthy (Bantam; $14). “They’re already peaking their way in health-food stores.”

The health industry is so hyped about antioxidants that even cosmetic companies are catching the fever. “Cosmetic manufacturers have begun to recognize that what they create works so much better if you have the right nutrients in the body,” says Brock, who’s considering a phytochemical and antioxidant pill to sell along with a phytochemical moisturizer for the skin.

This new development certainly works in tandem with another fast-growing phenomenon: the medical spa, which is a clinic that also offers day spa services and is supervised by licensed medical professionals. Since 2000, individuals have been looking for such full-service facilities for facelifts, acupuncture, Botox injections, and massage and body treatments

Seattle, Washington
Ken Lombard, 52, is signing up artists for Starbucks’s own record label, Hear Music, which will use the company’s stores as a significant distribution channel. The first artist to commit: Paul McCartney.

“The shift from traditional record stores to big-box retailers for CD sales, and the shift away from radio have limited how consumers discover new music. That has made it harder for new artists to build a career and for legendary acts to reach their fans.

Starbucks has a unique set of assets with more than 13,000 stores worldwide and 44 million customers per week, the most loyal of which visit as many as 18 times a month. That’s a tremendous platform for artists
