SIMON PEGG used to kiss posters of Princess Leia in his bedroom. And nearly three decades on, he still cringes at the moment he got to meet his Star Wars pin-up CARRIE FISHER. “I queued at a San Diego comic convention in 2004 to meet her”, says Simon, 39

Pop culture joins apocalyptic lure

0 Comments | Deseret News (Salt Lake City), Nov 21, 2009 | by Ron Orozco McClatchy Newspapers

Are we doomed?

Prophecies about the end of the world have been debated by scholars, theologians and religious leaders for a long time. But it’s not just them.

Pop culture also has a fascination with end times. Sociologists say the interest in books, movies and lectures on the subject increases with bad times, such as those scarred by hurricanes, famines, tsunamis, war and economic collapse.

The fascination is clear in society today with the release of recent movies. The film “2012″ depicts the end of the world and is stirring talk about the meaning of a Mayan calendar with the doomsday date. Another movie, “The Road,” which opens Nov. 25, looks at a man and his son’s post-apocalyptic struggle to survive.

Margaret Gonsoulin, a sociology professor at California State University, Fresno, Calif., says the fascination with end times in pop culture reflects a hunger for meaning in the anxiety people feel in bad times.

“They want to know about the future,” she says, “but these sorts of ideas about end times mean different things to different people.”

U. professor dies after falling from campus shuttle

0 Comments | Deseret News (Salt Lake City), Nov 21, 2009 | by Lana Groves

A former University of Utah professor died from injuries sustained when she fell out the emergency exit of a campus shuttle Thursday.

The 63-year-old, whose identity has not been released, was standing on a westbound shuttle bus that was turning left from North Campus Drive onto Mario Capecchi Drive on campus about 8:20 p.m. when she was somehow thrown backward toward the emergency exit and fell out of the shuttle, said University Police Sgt. Mike McPharlin.

The woman was transported to University Hospital for emergency surgery, but later died, McPharlin said.

U. police are attempting to notify the family of the woman, who they believe live in China.

University officials said the woman last taught on campus in 2000 as an associate professor and became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 2003.

The bus involved in the accident was inspected by university police and the Utah Highway Patrol and found to be “roadworthy,” according to a statement from the university. However, the bus and two others like it have been removed from service as a precaution.

Investigators also found no evidence of driver error, the university said.

“We’re all a little depressed up here,” said Norman Chambers, assistant vice president for the University of Utah.

“The employee who was driving the vehicle was devastated by the whole thing,” Chambers said

BestWeek: State Legislators Try to Fend Off Federal Regulatory Effort

Business Wire, Nov 20, 2009

OLDWICK, N.J. — The members of the National Conference of Insurance Legislators have
been drawing a line in the sand, trying to mark what they contend is
appropriate regulatory territory for the states before the U.S. Congress
calls for the federal government to march into it, according to the most
recent issue of BestWeek U.S./Canada. And the organizations
leaders are encouraging the legislators to tell their congressional
delegations to stay out of state business.

At the groups annual meeting from Nov. 18-22 in New Orleans state
legislators criticized congressional attempts to encroach on
long-standing state authority over insurance coming out against
proposals for new federal entities, such as an insurance office and a
consumer protection agency that would oversee aspects of insurance.

I think the current administration and makeup of Congress is much more
federally driven at this point in time, said NCOILs new president,
Kentucky Rep. Robert Damron. Theyve forgotten states rights, even
those who were state legislators at one time.

$10 Million in Grants Aimed at Enrolling American Indian, Alaska Native Kids in Health Care to be Awarded

Business Wire, Nov 19, 2009

Tribes and Indian Health Providers Urged to Apply

WASHINGTON — HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius today announced the availability of up
to $10 million in grants to help reach American Indian and Alaska Native
(AI/AN) children who qualify for, but are not yet enrolled, in Medicaid
and the Childrens Health Insurance Program (CHIP).

These new grants are part of a broader effort to find and enroll
uninsured children who are eligible for Medicaid or CHIP but not
enrolled. The Childrens Health Insurance Program Reauthorization Act of
2009 (CHIPRA) set aside $100 million for fiscal years 2009-2013
expressly to help find and enroll eligible uninsured children, including
$10 million specifically for Indian health providers.

As called for in CHIPRA, grants will be awarded by the Centers for
Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) to applicants whose outreach,
enrollment and retention efforts will target geographic areas with high
rates of eligible but uninsured American Indian and Alaska Native
children, who often live in isolated areas and are uninsured at
higher-than-average rates.

American Indian children are often uninsured, although many are
eligible for Medicaid and CHIP, Secretary Sebelius said. These grants
will help Tribes and Indian health providers reach out to children and
families to ensure more children get the health care they need.

Grants will be awarded to applicants that will be able to demonstrate
increases in enrollment and improved retention of children already in
Medicaid and CHIP. Grantees will report to CMS the number of new
enrollees and those who retained coverage that are directly attributable
to the grant activities. Grantees will also report activities they
believe were the most effective in finding, enrolling and maintaining
coverage for eligible children.

States have been effective in enrolling over 28 million children in
Medicaid and more than 7 million children in CHIP, but there are still
millions of uninsured, low-income children who are not enrolled in these
programs even though they are eligible said Cindy Mann, the director of
the CMS Center for Medicaid and State Operations

Insight-ful

Insight-ful

Muscle & Fitness, Jan, 2010 by Jim Gorzelany

Now there’s a way to drive a “green” car and spend less “green” in the process, thanks to the new-for-2010 Honda Insight. Currently the least-expensive gas/electric hybrid vehicle sold in the United States at just less than $20,000, the Insight comes wrapped in sleek aerodynamic styling that sets it apart from other cars making more frequent stops at the fuel pump. Its four-door hatchback configuration affords a roomy four-passenger interior with a reasonably generous cargo hold.

A 98-horsepower, 1.3-liter, four-cylinder gasoline engine teams with a 10-kilowatt electric motor/generator to power the front wheels via a gearless, automatic, continuously variable transmission. The Insight can run solely on battery power in certain low-to mid-speed cruising conditions, though for the most part the electric motor is used to augment the gasoline engine. To further boost fuel efficiency, the engine can deactivate select cylinders during deceleration and will shut itself down altogether when the vehicle is stationary (since an idling car gets zero mpg). A novel Eco Assist dashboard display can help drivers achieve maximum mileage.

All told, the Environmental Protection Agency estimates the Insight will achieve a frugal 40 mpg in the city and 43 mpg on the highway
