OGDEN — You figure when your center smashes a school record with 10 blocked shots, when your senior captain gets the first double- double of his career and when your team shoots 50 percent from the field and 77 percent from the line, you ought to have a pretty good chance of winning.
Not if you’re the Utah basketball team, which didn’t have enough to beat a scrappy Weber State team that came back from a 14-point first-half deficit to win 83-76 Wednesday night at the Dee Events Center.
For the Wildcats, it marked their first win over the Utes in nine years and first at home since 1999. It was their second win of the season in six starts after playing several teams close.
“You know they earned this one,” said Weber State Randy Rahe, a former Ute assistant, who notched his first win over Utah. “I told them we deserved this one after everything we’ve been through. We’ve got a bunch of kids who play really, really hard and have some toughness. They kept fighting and this was a good game for it to turn around.”
The star of the game was sophomore guard Damian Lillard, who scored a career-high 28 points while dishing out seven assists and grabbing five rebounds. Steve Panos, who played for Highland High School and grew up as a Ute fan, added 20 points and seven rebounds.
The Utes were led by Kim Tillie, who had 20 points and 10 rebounds, while Carlon Brown added 16 and Luka Drca 12.
Then there was Ute sophomore David Foster, who blocked 10 shots to break the Ute record of seven set by Luke Nevill a year ago. Coach Jim Boylen couldn’t say enough about his center, who returned from an LDS mission just seven months ago.
“David was awesome — he’s going to be a great player,” Boylen said.
The problem was, the Utes didn’t take advantage of all the blocks, allowing Weber to get the loose balls and second chances at baskets.
“We did not win the loose ball game and did not win the transition game,” said Boylen

DEAR ABBY: You advised “Pooped Out in North Carolina” (Sept. 21) that as long as dog doo-doo is securely sealed in a bag, you saw no harm in putting it in a stranger’s garbage can.
While I agree in principle, as a homeowner who is a frequent recipient of foreign feces, there is a practical issue that you may not have foreseen. Our garbage collectors will not dispose of small bags of dog poop; they will only take trash bags of the larger size one would expect to contain household waste.
The result is that after our trash is taken, we’re left with several bags of strangers’ dog waste in the bottom of the can

MUNICH (AFP) Germany midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger has had a claim against him for damages worth nearly a million euros thrown out by a court here on Tuesday.
The 25-year-old Bayern Munich star, who has won 72 caps for his country and scored 19 goals, was facing a claim for 833,000 euros (1.25m US dollars) in damages plus interest for lost commissions from a German lawyer.
The lawyer, who is also the manager of a player advisory firm, claimed that in November 2005 a five-year contract between him and Schweinsteiger to represent the Germany star had been verbally agreed by a handshake.
But the court threw out the claim and the ruling is expected to be confirmed at a later date.
Schweinsteiger scored three goals for Germany in their qualification campaign…

Inspector Davy Anderson of Ballymoney PSNI praised local school children and shopkeepers after the big Christmas Lights Switch-On last Thursday night passed without any reports of incidents.
In previous years the event has been dogged with maurauding gangs of youngsters wreaking havoc by spraying party string and foam which people found hard to remove from both their hair and clothing.
The incidents marred the traditional start to the Christmas period in Ballymoney but last week peace and goodwill prevailed as there were no arrests and not one complaint made to police.
Police did take the precaution of approaching local shops in the run-up to the event asking them to take care when selling party string and foam.
There was a sizeable police presence at the event to help ensure the event ran smoothly from a public safety and also traffic point of view.
Inspector Anderson told the Times: “I am particularly pleased it was a very successful evening with a big crowd of people.
“We are not aware of any incidents and everybody enjoyed themselves.
There were no arrests and no complaints received by us.
“We had police on duty to facilitate traffic flow and to ensure the safety of people.
“There were no reports of foam or party string and we would like to praise the behaviour of everybody, particularly the young people.
“I also want to thank the shops. We had asked them not to sell party string or foam to people if they thought it was going to be mis-used as in previous years that has been the case at Christmas Lights Switch-ons which made it a misery for some of the people who attended in previous years,” said Inspector Anderson.
